Software Management

Anyone who is responsible for managing the finances of a company can tell you how difficult it can be to save money on expenses without hurting the company.  There are some things that a company is always going to need in order to successfully run.  Computers are an expensive necessity that a company is going to need for nearly all of their employees if they want to have any chance of making any real profits.  They don’t necessarily need to have the most top of the line in computer equipment.  More often then not employees just need a computer to run basic programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  The computers themselves are relatively inexpensive to purchase, especially since companies are able to get various discount, especially when they are buying in bulk.

The computers might be rather cheap, but what really hurts financially is when you have to keep their software updated.  Individually it doesn’t seem like a big deal, most software updates are going to be pretty cheap, usually not even breaking the triple digit limit.  Of course, when you have to start buying hundreds of them for each computer a small fee can turn into a huge one, sometimes even being greater then the actual cost of the computers themselves.

One way to get around that is by using virtual software.  Virtual software works by having all of the computers hooked up to one main host server.  The host server is the only thing that you need to keep upgraded, so instead of having to purchase software updates on each individual computer in the company instead all you need to do is keep the server up to date.  The computers are still going to require a bit of software to actually be able to hook up to the server, but you’ll still be saving quite a good deal of money.

For the guest computers you’re going to want them to have the least privilege amounts possible, otherwise you run the risk of someone accessing settings they shouldn’t be able to which could completely shut down the server and put a huge dent in productivity.  Password management software can help manage what employees are and aren’t able to access, ensuring that your virtual machines continue to run at their most optimal settings.  Because you only really have one main computer you can save a good deal of money on tech support, essentially just having the main server that you need to take care of.
